  • AMD Blames Intel for 3Q Loss

Published: Friday, October 5, 2001 | By: Dennis

AMD projected a major loss for the 3rd Quarter and didn't blame it on the bad economy or even the Sept. 11th attack but rather is pointing fingers at Intel. Aggressive pricing and marketing drove the active selling price of processors down.

  • New Soyo Dragon

Published: Thursday, October 4, 2001 | By: Dennis

SOYO Computer, Inc announced a revised edition to the already popular K7V DRAGON the K7V DRAGON-Plus. The new motherboard will use the VIA Apollo KT266A chipset along with an enhanced memory controller to further boost performance. Other than that the Dragon will remain relatively unchanged.

At this time I cannot confirm the press release on their websites so I'm uncertain as to when we can expect this new motherboard to hit the shelves.

  • ServerWorks not worried about Intel

Published: Wednesday, October 3, 2001 | By: Dennis

ServerWorks came to the server chipset table with a pretty big bang in recent years with their latest offering for the P3. This chipset provided excellent performance using simple and available SDRAM. ServerWorks isn't worried about Intel and their P4 platform either feeling they will still dominate the top players in the server market.

Personally I believe they underestimate what Intel has in store.

  • Cirrus Logic Completes Acquisition of ShareWave

Published: Wednesday, October 3, 2001 | By: Dennis

The Texas chipmaker has finished its acquisition of ShareWave and estimated a 5 million dollar gain. This is pretty good news for shareholders. One being that more money usually means good things, plus the acquisition gives Cirrus Logic an entry point into wireless connectivity.

  • FileSharing Programs Under Fire

Published: Wednesday, October 3, 2001 | By: Dennis

It looks like Napster isn't going to be the only company to be in the hot seat. Now the "clones" using the Gnutella network are under investigation.

"All the recording industry can do is shut down people trying to make businesses out of file trading."

Its a pretty good read if you have been out of the loop.

  • OTD, Outlook-transmitted disease

I cannot say that I don't agree with this author's views. He makes some valid points, though harsh, still valid. The issue of email viruses and Microsoft won't be going away any time soon (if ever) so our best defense is to keep on our toes, disable HTML in our emails, keep your software up to date, and stop opening attachments!

  • TweakMax on IDE Cables

Published: Tuesday, October 2, 2001 | By: Dennis

TweakMax has a great read on the good and bad of IDE. As some of you may know the maximum cable length for ata66/100 is 18", anything longer can cause data corruption. This corruption is also the reason for the additional grounding wires in modern ATA cable, and why rounding your ATA cables is bad if not done properly and with care. Take a look at TweakMax they touch on some really good points.

And, of course if you are curious about how you can round your ATA100 cables How-To article on the subject here.

  • Radeon 7500 Review @ RivaStation

Published: Tuesday, October 2, 2001 | By: Dennis

I must say a very impressive review. The 7500 is a die-shrunk and overclocked Radeon 1 so there isn't really that many new things to talk about except that it can outperform its price competitor the GeForce Pro.

If we can expect this performance from the 7500 I'm curious to know how the 8500 will do.

  • AOpen AK77Plus Review @ TheTechZone

Published: Tuesday, October 2, 2001 | By: Dennis

Aopen has been known to put out some pretty nice boards and every once in awhile they surprise us with something special. The Tech Zone has a sample of their latest offering the AK77Plus which to me looks to be quite similar to the Soyo Dragon without the sound. For more on the Soyo Dragon keep an eye out for our review that will be posted soon.

  • GeForce3 Titanium Previews

Published: Monday, October 1, 2001 | By: Dennis

There is actually to many "previews" to count and/or list here so I'm just going to pick one and run with it. Besides I think LittleWhiteDog says it best "I'm sure there will probably be a whole crapload of TI reviews today."

Now if only the game developers can catch up maybe we will have something to look forward to.
