TweakMax has a great read on the good and bad of IDE. As some of you may know the maximum cable length for ata66/100 is 18", anything longer can cause data corruption. This corruption is also the reason for the additional grounding wires in modern ATA cable, and why rounding your ATA cables is bad if not done properly and with care. Take a look at TweakMax they touch on some really good points.
