After careful consideration I have decided to transfer all hardware review activities to a new domain. I purchased Hardwareasylum.com in 2012 and have been working hard to build a new and improved Ninjalane on that domain. If you are reading this you have reached one of the archived articles, news, projects and/or reviews that were left behind during the site migration.

Soltek SL-75MRN-L Motherboard Review

Now for the fun stuff the nVidia IGP or Integrated Graphics Port.
Of the available features this one is the most disappointing, there is only one video port! Granted this isn't a showstopper and the board functions perfectly well as it is but, the way I see it if you are going to provide onboard video that has dual desktop capability why not provide it.
From the photo you can see a single video and serial port. Soltek provided an additional serial connection with this motherboard that plugs into a set of pins below the last PCI slot. You may notice the silkscreen provisions for a second serial port connection to the left. It would appear that somebody on the design team was thinking ahead.

The Sl-75MRN-L supports Dual Channel DDR 400 though only when an external video card is installed. While using the onboard video the memory clock is locked at or below 166Mhz (DDR333) regardless of what you set in the BIOS. The only way around this lock is to run the memory controller at 100% and raise the FSB to something above 166Mhz. As you will see later doing this has a direct adverse effect on video performance.
Like all previous Soltek motherboards this board comes with an impressive set of "full-version" software like Partition Magic and Drive Image Pro (that are not usable with WindowsXP) along with the other needed items such as a users guide, software manual (for the included software), ATA133 and floppy cables. The items you won't see include the 6-channel audio adapter, and additional USB cables. Check out the nifty case badge (shown in the upper right).
Here is something that struck me as being a little strange, unlike on the SL-75FRN sample the 75MRN doesn't have an AGP card lock. Personally I find the card locks to be a little annoying so really it won't be missed.
As the sticker says don't install anything but AGP 3.0 compliant video cards into the SL-75MRN unless you really want to buy some new equipment (if you know what I mean)
