  • AGP 8x Gainward Video Card Reviews @ HotHardware

Published: Thursday, December 5, 2002 | By: Dennis

HotHardware has two Gainward "Golden Sample" video cards under review and include the two AGP 8x offerings from nVidia. One of the things that I really like about Gainward video cards is the degree of overclockability that is built into each one, the gains aren't the best but it's the thought that counts.
" Aside from the addition of AGP8X, Gainward has redesigned the GF4 MX Pro 600 8X/XP 'Golden Sample' so it hardly resembles the "standard" Pro 600"
    ..[snip]..
"The card comes configured with slightly more aggressive timings than standard MX cards, pushing the new core to 275MHz vs. the 270MHz common of other GeForce4 440 MXs. The memory also enjoys a little boost over standard speeds, running a full 100MHz faster than previous MX440s at 500MHz."

  • Ti4800 Chips Silently Released

Published: Thursday, December 5, 2002 | By: Dennis

In an attempt to not draw any press from the NV30 launch nVidia released two new NV28 based chips to customers, the Ti4800 SE and Ti4800 both being AGP 8x versions of the Ti4400 and Ti4600.
"However, Nvidia has kept a very low profile about the two new chips. Instead of an official launch, the company merely delivered samples to customers for product design and notified them that the mass production of the two chips is expected to begin at the earliest by the end of 2002."

  • Limited Overclocking on Intel Motherboards

Published: Thursday, December 5, 2002 | By: Dennis

This is a strange bit of news and if correct will also introduce overclocking to the mainstream.
"According to sources, to enhance its competitiveness in the clone market, Intel has decided to allow users to adjust voltage and memory module transmission frequency on its own-brand Canterwood and Springdale boards, which are expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2003."
No info thus far about FSB adjustments but it's a start to say the least.

  • Trojan Disguised as a Keygen

Published: Wednesday, December 4, 2002 | By: Dennis

WinBeta.org has uncovered a trojan scam involving a key generator for the leaked version of Longhorn. The program appeared to work as advertised but in the background a file named syscfg32 started to connect to an IRC channel over the Internet.
"We were a bit disappointed to find that it was a lame VB program, but good enough as long as it spits unique keys out. Its quick! spits out keys like crazy! We were more interested in it because LH keys are .NET keys.

Then weird things began to happen, a strange app called syscfg32 began trying to access the internet on IRC ports. hmmm

The winbeta security team decided to investigate."

The trojan will allow full access to your system by anyone with the right password so don't bother to download a file named longhornkeygen.exe

  • EPoX 8RDA+ nForce2 Review @ Hexus

Published: Wednesday, December 4, 2002 | By: Dennis

It is sometimes hit or miss with EPoX motherboards, sometimes they make a good one, and other times its just a board.
"EPoX have maintained their trademark dark green shade of PCB on the 8RDA+. Unlike the recently reviewed ABIT offering, the EPoX still carries the 4 mounting holes around the CPU socket, thereby allowing you to use larger coolers for more effective cooling;"
The Hexus guys seem to like it even though it is quite bare when it comes to additional features.
"The EPoX 8RDA+ nForce2 has clearly been designed to appeal to those of us who simply want a motherboard based on the fastest Socket A chipset at a reasonable price. By not catering for RAID in any form, and not providing the additional S/PDFIF add-on card, it appears as if EPoX have sought to get a motherboard out to market quickly."

  • Gamesurround MUSE 5.1 DVD Review @ RadiativeNZ

Published: Wednesday, December 4, 2002 | By: Dennis

I have actually used the MUSE video cards quite often in the budget systems that I've built in the past and have been quite happy with their performance.
"The card is a rather spiffy looking blue colour with the Hercules logo stamped on it. It's rather sparse looking, but that is certainly nothing out of the ordinary nowadays. It uses the C-Media 8738 chip which supports 6 channel output."
This card is definitely worth a look.

  • Soltek SL-85DR3 Motherboard Review @ 3dXtreme

Published: Tuesday, December 3, 2002 | By: Dennis

The i845PE enabled motherboard from Soltek is under review at 3dXtreme and they seem to like the offering.
"I didn't have any problems with placement of the two DIMM sockets. I was a bit disappointed that this motherboard only supported 1 GB or ram. I have four sticks of PC3200 but have not had need to have more than two sticks in each rig at this point"
