After careful consideration I have decided to transfer all hardware review activities to a new domain.  I purchased Hardwareasylum.com in 2012 and have been working hard to build a new and improved Ninjalane on that domain.  If you are reading this you have reached one of the archived articles, news, projects and/or reviews that were left behind during the site migration.

Please update your bookmarks and be sure to visit the new and improved Ninjalane at Hardwareasylum.com

    Product Design and Features

The QNAP NMP-1000 features support for a single SATA harddrive that is mounted to a sturdy plastic tray.  The drive is not hot-swappable but does allow for plenty of drive space supporting 3.5" drives up to 2TB.
The drive tray is secured in place with 2 small screws and then concealed behind the drive door.  The only drawback to the plastic tray approach is that lack of rubber mounting to minimize drive vibrations.
The back of the NMP-1000 is very robust in terms of audio and visual connections.  All of the connections are clearly marked and do not differ from a high quality DVD or Blu-Ray player.

    Connections include.
    HDMI v1.3a
    component (Y, Pb, Pr)
    composite video
    S-Video
    analog stereo out
    S/PDIF optical
    coaxial

External connections can be made using eSATA, USB, and Gigabit Ethernet.  802.11 b/g/n are supported using a USB wireless adaptor.

The NAS is built around the Sigma Designs SMP8635 processor with 256MB of DDR RAM and 64MB flash memory.  Please consult the QNAP website for a full spec sheet and updated information.
A feature that isn't directly hardware related is the lighting effects.  Both the navigation ring and underside of the front panel light up when the NMP-1000 is activated adding a little color to your home theater setup.
